Excerpt

Jessica had no idea how long she and Kip were lying on the ground, but she prayed as she did. When she could feel footsteps as they thundered the ground, her first instinct was to defend Kip. Jessie patted the ground this time in search of the gun. She had dropped it before coming to Kip, and it seemed such a far distance away, she was afraid to leave him while she searched. The owner of those feet would arrive before she could return. Her eyes were nearly swollen shut now. Hot streaks of tears slid down through the drying layer of blood on her cheeks.
“Jessie, Jessica, hold on, honey.” She knew that voice. It wasn’t Brand’s but Jacquard’s.

“Jac?” she whispered, not daring to believe it.
“We’re here, honey.” Garrett? Thank God. Her friends were swearing. She frantically tried to check on Kip as Garrett pulled her away from her brother.
“No! Help me,” she begged. Her voice raspy and frantic. “Kip’s been shot. I can’t see well, so I don’t know how badly he’s hurt. He doesn’t wake, but his heart is beating.”
Gentle muscular arms steadily pulled her away from her charge as she fought to remain by his side, crying out in pain as she did. “Shush, Jessie. Hush, honey. Jac is assessing the situation. You need to come over here with me.” Garrett pulled her away and lifted her into his arms. Jessie couldn’t stifle the shriek of pain at the movement. “Shit, darlin’ you’re really hurt. Were you shot?” His voice hardened as he asked the question and began gently patting her down in search of a wound. Sharlee called this their protective mode. The most dangerous one for these men, but right now, Jessie needed it.
Someone was pounding through the bushes, coming through the woods. Brand. “Garrett, he’s coming back,” she said in a hushed, urgent voice. “There’s a gun on the ground somewhere.”
“No, honey, it’s your Mark. I can see him, and he is a bull in charge mode. Let him take care of you without any fuss. You both need this. If you were shot, I don’t see where.”
“No, but I got roughed up a little.”
“Sweetness, you got roughed up a lot.”
Suddenly she was in familiar arms, his scent surrounding her in reassurance. Mark’s voice cut through her own fear-pumped thoughts. “Jessica, it’s me, baby. I’ve got you now. You’ll be okay. I’ll protect you. How hurt are you? Do you think you have any broken bones? How about your ribs? Kidneys? Your poor face.”
His voice was agitated but confident. Controlled. He was in control, and Jessie needed that more than she could say at the moment. The tears broke through in earnest now.
Mark looked at Garrett. “Is she hurt? Jessie? Where did you get hurt?” He repeated Garrett’s previous body tapping.
Garrett answered for her. “Nothing significant. I think she was roughed up pretty badly, but not shot. The branches and bushes did most of that skin damage, and it looks like she hit the ground a few times. She might have hit her head because there are several swelled areas on her face; however, I think those were inflicted by the same person who gave her that imprint on the side of her face. It all appears rather self-explanatory. Her body hurts all over, not one particular spot, although her belly is bruising pretty good. I figure she doesn’t have anything broken. I can’t be sure. The majority of the blood on her is his.” Garrett pointed at Kip.
Mark nodded as he held tight, giving his lover a little time to fall apart before they had to deal with the rest of this shit-fest.

Meet Alyssa Bailey:

USA Today and International best-selling author, Alyssa Bailey, is a dyed in the wool Texan living amongst the beauty of Southeast Alaska. She lives where the sky meets the mountains; the mountains touch the ocean, and the wildlife frolic on land, sea, and air. Humans, the ultimate interlopers, are wedged in where allowed and are properly thankful for the privilege.
Alyssa loves writing about consensual power exchanges between strong, intelligent, sassy women who are not afraid to make a stand and men confident enough to give his woman space, but Alpha enough to keep her safe.
If she can throw a little mystery, humor, and suspense in her stories, it’s even better. She writes historical and contemporary love stories devised to leave you with that book hangover we crave.

Out of Curiosity…

  1. Where did Jessie come from?
Accounting, of course. Ha-ha Jessie was mentioned in the first book as a quiet, non-descript scene filler and before I knew it, she was taking over one of the ending scenes of Saving Sharlee.

  1. Mark seemed more intense and yet disciplined less than the others. Why?
Mark disciplined for discipline and he wasn’t as much into that as the sexy discipline sessions. He also adjusted his intensity to be with Jessie who was a polar opposite from Sharlee. The things we do for love.

  1. What is one of your favorite things to do?
Have a tea party. We do one at Christmas with all the girls from 0 to 99.

  1. Do you like your men with long or short hair?
LONG. If it is kept neat and clean, I love it flowing down his back.

  1. Beard or mustache?
Both, if you mean on him not her. I love a full beard on some and then some… not so much. Mustache is the same. If it is trimmed neatly and kept clean, I love it. No straggly mess for me.
