Happy Thanksgiving!

It's that time of year again. The temperature is dropping. The leaves are turning colors and cluttering the ground. Santa Claus will be visiting soon, but first the Turkey is going to have his day!

A lot of Americans like to give thanks this today, so here goes...

I’m thankful for my health, which is a commodity--not a given--for many people.

I’m grateful to Greg, my husband, for always supporting me, valuing my opinions, and taking me seriously when I’m being foolishly adamant about something. But not too seriously. We’re total goofballs.

To my cats—you make me smile and curse every day, but I wouldn’t be happy without you.

I’m grateful to Bradley Publishing, a now-defunct publisher, for accepting my first story back in 2012 and opening the doors for me in the publishing world. Books to Go Now, Resplendence Publishing (now-defunct), and The Wild Rose Press have also taken a chance on me.

ELF, my editor with the Wild Rose, has been amazing. I appreciate her hard work, her professional but kind advice, and her willingness to push me to make my books better and better.

I’ve met so many authors since my publishing journey began, and I’m grateful to call several of them friends and colleagues. I’m always willing to share their news of new releases or giveaways, and they often return the favor.

My readers are wonderful. Thank you for reading my books and writing reviews.

My critique partners are invaluable. It’s so hard for me to catch every error in my story, so you guys rock!

~*~

What are you thankful for?
Please comment. I'd love to know.

#BookSpotlight - "The Twin Contract" by CeeRee Fields

Blurb

A forced impersonation, a binding contract, and a cop she would give up everything for.

Brianna Spencer has never been the favored daughter. That place has always been reserved for her identical twin sister, Briony. Briony crushes anyone that stands between her and her wants. Until the fateful night, she sneaks out to a party and disappears from her doting parents' lives. Thus, Brianna's plans for a quiet life are thrown into chaos as she is coerced to pay the price for her sister's selfishness.

For ten years, Brianna has been forced to assume her socialite sister's identity. Now, at age twenty-seven, Brianna begins to wonder if she will ever break free of her sister's identity and live out her own dreams.

Jackson McCord loathes liars. Raised by parents who conned anyone and everyone, Jackson could spin a lie and have the person swear it was the truth. Until his parents were arrested when he was twelve, and a cop saved him. A man he learned to respect and who taught him that dishonesty has consequences. Then he meets Brianna Spencer, a woman he never expected to fall for and one whose entire existence is a lie.

One twin dead. One twin sacrificed for her family's sanity. And a man who pierces the veil of lies and sees the true heart of the living twin. Can Jackson pull her from the mire of deception? Or will Brianna remain in her dead sister's shadow?

Excerpt

“Nope, just here to make sure you don’t get in the house. Brianna is more than capable of fighting her own battles.” Jackson stepped to the side, giving Brianna a clear shot at Christopher.
Before he could take a step into her home, Jackson’s arm shot across the threshold. His muscled arms made Christopher’s look like limp noodles. His eyes widened while Jackson’s smile broadened.
“You need to get rid of your guard dog.” Christopher pointed to Jackson.
“I think he’s more like a panther or a tiger.” She tossed a grin Jackson’s way. “I dare you to yank his tail.”
“This isn’t a joke, Briony. You need to quit with this shit, and we need to talk.” He reached for her.
“Don’t touch me.” Brianna swung back at the man she hated with every fiber of her being. “I am not Briony.
He gasped and then grinned in malicious delight. “You just broke the contract and the NDA.”
She arched a brow. “I didn’t, and if you know anything about the contract, that means someone else has broken it first. So, Chrissy, what is it you’re really after?”
“Us.” He tried to lean closer to her, but Jackson’s arm never moved. Instead, Christopher pushed on as if Jackson weren’t next to him. “You and I being together makes sense—”
Jackson’s chuckles interrupted Christopher.
“What the hell is so funny?” He jabbed a finger at Jackson.
“You keep claiming a dead woman for your girlfriend. I’ll give you a piece of advice: you need to move on and get a life.”
Brianna hid her smile and cleared her throat of the chuckle that wanted to escape. “As fun as it is to watch two guys go at it, I’m exhausted. So finish, Christopher, and then get off my porch.”
He raked his fingers through his blond hair. “Look, our families are the most powerful in the state. When your grandmother passes, you’ll eventually be in line to take over—”
“No, I won’t.” She was glad now to have been forgotten while her grandmother and father had battled it out in the library. “Grandmother has already signed controlling interest to another when she steps down. Hell, she’s already stepped most of the way down, and the man who’s running it now will keep it for his heirs.”
“She’ll quickly fix that the second our names are joined.”
“No.” Brianna squinted at the asshole in front of her. “I’m not dating you, I’m not marrying you, and I’m not having this conversation. Get the hell off my property.”
“You’ll cave. You always do. Briony was the only one who ever stood up to your parents. You’re the one who ran and hid.” He smirked. “And you’ll marry me. It’s what your parents want.”
“My grandmother is on my side—”
“Please. That bat will be declared incompetent, and then your parents will take over. They’ll reassign your grandmother’s assets since your parents and my parents both want this, and Briony and I wanted it. You’re falling in line, Brianna. And you’ll learn to love it.” He stepped forward but was stopped from touching her or crossing into her home by Jackson’s bulk.
“What the fuck?” He laughed derisively. “This? This is what you go for? Some over-sized meathead who doesn’t have much of a pot to piss in?”
Brianna growled. “He’s more of a man than you, and he’s got a big ass pot to piss in.” She snarled then winced. Christ, it was a wonder Jackson hadn’t left her if that was the best she could come up with. Jackson’s arched brow and wicked grin made her shake her head. “Get him off my property.”
“With pleasure.” Jackson faced Christopher. “I’m with the Sheriff’s Department, kid, so you will vacate this property, or I will arrest you.” Jackson leaned in. “Now, me, I hope you don’t leave so I can arrest you. Not having any cuffs on me, I’m sure you’ll resist. While Brianna runs to get my badge and cuffs from the car, I might have to make sure you’re subdued, especially since I don’t have any backup.”
Christopher’s gaze raked across both of them.
Brianna squared her shoulders; she wasn’t ashamed of sleeping with Jackson. Compared to the handful of men Brianna had dated, Jackson was smoking hot and in a category all his own.
Christopher chuckled harshly. “Guess you are more like your sister than you’re willing to admit.”
Guess I am,” she smirked and nuzzled into Jackson's side, sliding her hand over the hard plane of his chest. “Gotta say, at least my taste is a hell of a lot better than hers.”
“Look, I don’t care who you fuck, any more than I cared who Briony screwed. You can spread your legs for every guy in town for all I care. As long as the brat you pop passes a paternity test that names me as the dad, you can screw to your little heart’s content.” He smoothed a hand across his chest. “Because I’ll be doing the same.”
“That’s it,” Jackson said, moving forward his arms out as he forced Christopher to step back.
But Brianna was beyond pissed, she wanted the asshole gone. She wanted him off her land never to return. Slamming her hand on the bottom of the wall-mounted cabinet next to the door. She watched the secret shelf unfolded with her twelve-gauge nestled inside. The cabinet was a gift from Callie since she felt Brianna’s gun needed to be downstairs, but Brianna hadn’t wanted to chance Callie’s boys playing with it and hurting themselves. The hidden compartment was the perfect solution, and the shelves came in handy to put the small gifts of stones and leaves the boys gave her.
Jackson was dragging Christopher off the porch, but Christopher put up a fight. To break up the standoff, Brianna cocked her buckshot-filled gun with a loud clack. Both men froze and looked over at her.
“Now, I’ve been neighborly and heard you out even though I hate your guts.” Brianna leveled the gun at Christopher. “This can go one of a few ways. Either you leave, Jackson arrests you, or I shoot you, and the paramedics can cart you away. But the end result is you will be getting the ever-loving-fuck off my property.”
Rage at him, even thinking she would bow down to him, made her want to pull the trigger and fill him with buckshot. If she aimed just right, she wouldn’t kill him, only hurt him… a lot.

About the Author

I'm a geek, a gamer, a music lover, and a voracious reader. I love Star Trek and B-grade movies like Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and Sharknado. I enjoy figuring out software, learning new things, and applying them to whatever book I'm currently working on.

I write romantic adventures. Mostly, I live vicariously through my characters. I can be a knife-wielding forager who saves her family from deadly kidnappers or a slinky thief who must outmaneuver her sadistic cousin. My male characters aren't cookie cutter either. There's so much diversity in the world that one size does not fit all. It's the same for love. My male characters are diverse. I have several he-man, alpha types, but I also have nerds in glasses who can kickass when needed, whether in a board room or in a parking garage. I have characters who are blind and some who have lost a limb putting their lives on the line to save others.

The one thing they all have in common is they are people who learn to move past their hurdles and find love.

#GuestPost and #AuthorInterview - Daryl Devoré

Writer's Inspiration

One question writers get asked, "Where do you get your inspiration from?"
Most of the time I'm stuck for an answer. Stories just come to me.
Another question is, "What was your playlist for this book?"
I don't have playlists. I write in silence. Distractions distract me. I'm a bit ADD. Oh, look a chicken. Is there chocolate?
My publisher put out a call for Christmas shorts. Short novellas that focus on the holiday season. I thought it sounded like a fun idea.
But it was mid-Oct and I couldn't get into the Christmas spirit – heck it wasn't even Canadian Thanksgiving yet. The grass was green. The flowers were still in bloom.
So I popped on my head phones and listened to Christmas music – not just any Christmas music – Trans Siberian Orchestra. If you've never listened to them – give it a go. Wow – their take on Christmas music is phenomenal. One song in particular – Carol of the Bells. (Technically, its name on the album cover is Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24.) To catch a listen - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6FhOb7-1dg
The story behind their version of the song – On Christmas Eve, a lone man challenges the war playing music on the rubble of the destruction of his city – Sarajevo. When you listen to this song, you can hear the beauty and then the destruction – the jarring rock music wonderfully portraying the bombs and chaos.
In my story, Love in the Key of C, the rock music is Giselle's life. It's a mess. Not the life she'd planned and something she was truly embarrassed about.
Giselle, is you or I. No one special, but life kicked her down once too often. There by the grace of God go I – that line wasn't the basis for the story – the music was – but it does help understanding.
The story follows the same structure of the song – calm – chaos – calm – chaos then resolution. All in under 10,000 words.
So for once, I can answer two interview questions –
"Where do you get your inspiration from?"
Trans Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24
"What was your playlist for this book?"
Trans Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24

Can a slice of pizza and a flute erase the ravages of life and allow Giselle and Ethan to fall in love by Christmas?
Collapsing in front the biggest department store in the city on one of the busiest days of the holiday season was not how Giselle imagined her day. Cold and hungry, she trudged through her daily existence wondering if she'd ever find happiness again.
Teenagers. Ethan loved working with them and turning their raw musical talent into something beautiful and rewarding, but that didn't fill the black void in his soul.
Like fate, the songwriters' muse nudged Giselle and Ethan together. But can Giselle overcome her fears and can Ethan get past the darkness that surrounds him, so they can find love?

Excerpt

She looked so cold and weak, like she hadn't eaten in a while and was clinging with failing resolve to any semblance of a normal life. I heard the rumbling of her stomach. Anybody could who happened to be within a ten-foot radius.
But more importantly, she was beautiful. No, not her outside. Her clothes were worn and hung on her like she'd purchased them three sizes too big. The sallowness of her skin resembled some of the dead and faded leaves that still clogged the city's sewers. Her hair was wet from the weather and a small cap of whiteness rested on her shoulders. A shiver shot through me as I glanced down at her feet. Tired shoes soaked from the slush on the sidewalk. I fought off the sensation of how cold her toes must be.
It was her eyes that captured me. No, not the color, which was brown if you really needed to know. It was the pain of her existence that poured from them. They were a billboard exposing the humiliation that hung around her shoulders and robbed her of the proud stance she'd once possessed.
I wanted to help her, offering her a moment of warmth, rest and nourishment. What stopped me? A debate raged inside. Did I offer her this gift and then release her back into the elements and despair that had become her life? Wouldn't that be cruel? Or, did I look away and pretend she didn't exist, like so many others had done? I knew how this city worked. What we refuse to acknowledge does not then taint our lives.
Taint.
Taint me—dammit. I needed to meet this woman. To know her story.

A Dozen Questions and Answers with Daryl Devoré

How long does it usually take you to write a book?
It can range from less than a month to several years.

How did you come up with the idea for your book?
I can answer this question for this book – it was inspired by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24. Catch a listen here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6FhOb7-1dg

When you develop characters do you already know who they are before you begin writing or do you let them develop as you go?
I let them develop. Sometimes I don't even know their names and they go by X until they announce their name.

Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
That would be like work – having a set amount of words per day. I'm an extremely undisciplined writer.

What is the hardest thing about writing?
Marketing. Somehow writers have to be marketing experts. We aren't business oriented – we're creative artists.

What is the easiest thing about writing?
I can do it in my PJs.

What do you do when you’re not writing?
Yoga. Yoga. And …more yoga.

Do you like music or silence when your write?
Ah! I can answer this one as well – usually I need silence. I get distracted too easily. But the inspiration was the song – so I listened to it over and over again.

What do you think makes a good story?
A good story is like beauty – it is only in the eye of the beholder. If the author likes the book, then it is a good story. What defines that is individual to each author. The books I read and the books I write are vastly different. Is one better than the other? No. And I know this isn't an actual answer to the question, but my true answer would be pages long.

Do you outline or do you just write?
Outline?? What is an outline??? I'm a pantser – I just go for it.

What do you love best about this book?
It's a sweet romance. No complicated sex scene to write.

What is your next project?
I'm in the middle of reworking a medieval fantasy romance – possibly turning a stand-alone into a trilogy.

Erin’s pillow was toasty-warm and smelled so good. She snuggled into the warmth, smoothing her hand across the furry surface. Sometime in the night, Buttercup must’ve climbed into bed with her. Erin stroked her palm over the tiny Yorkshire terrier’s fur.

“Buttercup…” Too zonked-out to open her eyes, she muttered, “You naughty girl. You know you’re not allowed on my bed.” But something wasn’t quite right and Erin’s jet-lagged brain refused to click into place. She let her hand drift downward, over warm ridges and more fur…only, not fur…a light dusting of hair.

“Sweetheart, you’re about to stroke something, and I can promise you it isn’t Buttercup.” The deep, sleep rasped voice shocked Erin out of her dopey state.
