#NewRelease #CharacterInterview - "The Story Between Us" by Darlene Deluca

Congrats on your new release, Darlene, and I'm so happy the heroine from your novel has stopped by for a chat.
Let's get started...

What’s your name?

Hi, I’m Kristen Hanover, heroine of The Story Between Us

What do you look like?

I’ve got brown hair with reddish highlights that falls a few inches below my shoulders. I tend to wear it down or in a single braid. I also have green eyes and a smattering of freckles across my cheeks that seem to explode in the summer.

What time period does your story take place?

It’s a story of contemporary life. We could be friends today!

What conflicts are you facing?

To tell you the truth, they’re wearing me thin. I’m trying to focus on my career and really make the most of my recent success, but there’s so much going on to distract me. My brother is ready to sell the family farm following my mother’s death, so I’m facing the big cleanout and having to sell our horses – including my own pet, Star. It’s a tough, emotional time for me. Then I meet a really sweet kid and get a great story idea based on one of his heartwarming memories of his parents. I have visions of adorable illustrations and a treasured keepsake for this charming little boy who likes my books. I’m thinking of a dedication, maybe a scholarship fund from a portion of the sales. We’re both excited about the idea. Then his uncle/guardian accuses me of exploiting the boy – using him to make a couple of bucks. Whoa! Are you kidding me?

What is your occupation? Are you any good at it? Do you like it?

I write children’s books, and I love it. My newest book shot up the charts and became a bestseller, so I’m now on tour visiting classrooms and bookstores and meeting my adorable young fans. Interacting with them is a blast. Kids are so funny, and I’m humbled to be an influence in their lives.

What skill do you have that you’re proud of? Why?

Besides writing, I have a couple of skills, or talents. I can handle a horse pretty well and love to ride. I also play guitar. Now that I think about it, it’s interesting that both of these things are activities that help me wind down, to clear my head and let my thoughts wander. They soothe my soul. And I’ve found that they can help others. In this story, I’m able to connect with a little kid, that’s Dylan, by playing my guitar in a private jam session. Music has a way of bringing people together. And because I have some horsemanship skills, I’m able to help Dylan overcome his fear of horses, which has caused some issues on his grandpa’s ranch. I’m definitely proud of that accomplishment!

What did you think the first time you saw Reed?

I noticed two things about Reed Armstrong right away. First, he was a fine speciman – good looking, nicely put together and kind of a hunk. But, second, I could tell he wasn’t thrilled about being dragged to a book signing that evening. He seemed bored and ready to get out of there. I caught that look of impatience in his otherwise gorgeous smoky blue eyes. So, while he sent my heart rate spiking, he also got my defenses up. After all, my book signing in a popular Dallas bookstore was a great place to be!

What do you wish your author had not told others about you?

Sigh. I don’t think it was necessary for her to tell everyone that I’d been warned, that I was headed for trouble and it was my own fault. Okay, yes, my agent had warned me about getting involved with fans. She said it was a bad idea – more than once. But Dylan is such a sweet kid, and I couldn’t turn away from him and his tragedy. His uncle…well, he needed help, too. They tugged at my heartstrings. Maybe I should’ve been more cautious, but come on, who wants to hear “I told you so?!”

Book Tag: When a children’s book author gets a story idea from a young fan who’s lost his parents in a tragic accident, she knows she’s hit gold. She sees a bestseller and heartwarming keepsake. But the boy’s guardian sees exploitation.

Blurb:

Her agent warned her not to get attached to a fan. But children's book author Kristen Hanover is about to break the rules. Kristen meets a young boy who is a victim of a tragic accident and is drawn into the heartbreaking situation.

Six years ago, Reed Armstrong never imagined he'd actually become guardian of his sister's boy. Now he is, and most days he's not sure he's up to the task.

When he and Dylan meet Kristen, Reed downplays his nephew's crush on the author. But as their lives become unexpectedly intertwined, he finds himself captivated as well. Trouble is, she sells stories for a living. Does she truly care about Dylan…and Reed, or is she using them for her own career advancement?

Excerpt:

Reed pulled his keys out of his pocket. In the doorway, he folded his arms and leaned against the casing. “Can I ask you a question?”

Chest pounding, Kristen forced a smile. “Of course.” She took a couple of steps toward him and braced a hand against the back of the sofa.

“Is writing your only reason for being here?”

Heavy, charged air closed around her. How to answer that? Honestly, of course, but…how honestly? “Well, writing is my goal for sure. But—” She glanced around the room before looking at him again. “I’d love to ride my horse, er, Star, and spend some time with…with people I like, too.”

As he pushed off from the door, a slow grin spread across his face. “Sounds like an excellent plan.” He sauntered closer. About a foot away, he stopped. “You’re good with dinner at the main house tonight? Don’t let Dylan bully you. You decide.”

She gave a shaky laugh. That was the plan, right? She couldn’t remember for sure. Her brain was going fuzzy. “I’d love to,” she managed to say.

He leaned closer, his breath warm on her cheek. She braced herself for a friendly peck, but when her eyes fluttered shut, his lips grazed hers. Hovered there, and when she thought her legs might give out, Reed caught her arm and pulled her slightly toward him, his lips covering hers again.

Sparks exploded in her brain, and she grabbed hold of his arm. All of her senses came alive and responded to the unexpected deluge.

A long moment later, he pulled back and brushed a thumb across her cheek. “See you in about an hour.”

Kristen could only nod. As soon as the door closed behind him, she collapsed against the sofa. She ran a finger along her bottom lip. That kiss…Oh, man. The chances of her getting any writing done this weekend just dropped from unlikely to who-said-anything-about-writing?

#GuestPost from Sydney Winward

Authors Who Have Influenced My Writing

I first started writing more seriously when I was fifteen years old, when I decided that this was what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a writer! As a fifteen year old, I idolized Christopher Paolini and taped quotes from him all over my walls. Here are a few of them:

“Books are my friends, my companions. They make me laugh and cry and find meaning in life.”

“If I spent my time worrying about what other people would think of my work, I would be too self-conscious to write.”

“I think I learned most from editing, both editing myself and having someone else edit me. It's not always easy to have someone criticize your work, your baby. But if you can swallow your ego, you can really learn from the editing.”

“If you want to be a professional writer then you need to write consistently. Inspiration strikes about once every blue moon which, for me, is once every two and a half to three months, which is when I'll get really and truly inspired about something.”

Other authors who have influenced my writing:

-Brandon Sanderson with his incredible world building.
-Sarah J. Maas with her talent for getting her fans to really care about and obsess over her characters.
-Sarah Eden with her depth of characters. She can get me to love a character so much that I’ll actually cry when something awful happens to them.

Here’s a little bit about my new release, Bloodbond, the second book in the Bloodborn Series, which can be read as a standalone.

Blurb:

Zachariah Degore spent ten years locked under ground as a feral vampire. Now he has to redefine what it means to be healthy and whole. With his human life behind him, he starts anew in the vampire city of Ichor Knell with the vampire shah as his kin. He must prove he is worthy of his place in this new world.

Laurel Covaci is vampire elite, she would never court a feral vampire. After two hundred years she has yet to find a mate who meets with her satisfaction. She hides the pain of past hurt and abandonment behind a cold façade. Zach is confident that Laurel is the vampire for him, but can he break through her icy walls and convince her he's the mate she's been waiting for?

Excerpt:

She stared at him. And stared. Until it became uncomfortable.

So he stood and started to pack up his things, but she glared at him and pointed to his seat.

“Sit.” He did. Who could disobey a tone like that? “You can’t kill?” she asked incredulously. “You only recently came out of being feral, correct?” He nodded. “And you can’t kill? Human blood doesn’t send you into a rage. You refused to drink from the goblet at the service.”

“Have you been spying on me?”

She ignored his comment, and her mouth puckered slightly as if in deep concentration. He couldn’t help but stare. He’d never seen her do it before. Another endearing quality he added to the lengthy list of what made Laurel Covaci absolutely perfect.

“I have searched high and low, but I simply cannot find any answers to this particular conundrum,” she finally said. Heat rose to his ears. She’d been thinking about him?

He grinned. “Well, well, Lady Covaci. I didn’t realize I was filling up your thoughts.”

She blushed prettily, and he almost expected her to get up from the table and leave, regretting she even sat down in the first place. But she stayed put. In fact, she stared right back as if challenging him. He enjoyed the eye contact. Her eyes were so blue. So beautiful. They took him back to green fields of his childhood, of staring back at the blue sky as clouds lazily drifted past.

About the Author:

#NewRelease #CharacterInterview - "Warrior's Progeny" by Jeny Heckman

Let's welcome the hero from Warrior's Progeny! Thank you for chatting with me today.

What’s your name?
Colton Stone. Colt for short

What do you look like?

I’m 6’7, 265 pounds, I’m an athlete, so I stay pretty fit. My hair’s pretty red and people think my eyes are the color of fire whiskey, whatever that means.

What time period does your story take place?

It’s summer of 2020

What is your occupation?
I’m a football player. A Seattle Warrior tight end
Are you any good at it?
I’m fucking awesome at it. If you haven’t heard of me, you live on Pluto.
Do you like it?
Yeah, I love it. I am thirty-six though, so it might be time to move on soon.

What did you think the first time you saw Lilly Morgan?
She was incredible. You should’ve seen her. She’s like what, 5’3 and a hundred pounds soaking wet, but she got so pissed at us for hitting her friend with a football. It didn’t matter that it was an accident. She was all hellfire and yappy, like a Chihuahua. I’m not gonna lie, she’s the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met.

What is your family like?
My mother died when I graduated from high school. My old man’s a knob. He got hurt when he was in high school. You know the story, the All-American that has a promising career ahead of him, then he gets hurt and becomes bitter. Andrew Stone…my dad. Since mom died, he has a way of using her to hurt me, sayin’ shit like she’d be disappointed in my choices. I actually became what he wanted to be himself and he can’t stand it. Anyway, I don’t see a lot of him. Usually he calls when he doesn’t like how I played in a game, and shows up only when he wants to impart useless bit of wisdom.

What’s your quirkiest habit?
I’m not really sure if it’s quirky. More like a bad habit I guess, but it’s my temper. I can always tell when I’ve scared the shit outta the player opposite me on the line. They like shrink somehow. One guy even told the paper that my eyes actually lit on fire. What a tool. I guess you can say my temper’s gotten me in some trouble from time to time. All you got to know is play me straight and I’ll play you the same. Say shit that isn’t true, don’t work hard on the field or generally piss me off, and we’re gonna have a problem.

Why do you think your author chose to write about you?

I guess my life has been pretty different from most people’s reality. I’ve worked hard to be here and I think she recognizes I’m ready to make some changes in my life. I can’t deny how Jeny see’s me. I can’t pretend that my way’s the best way anymore. I’m hoping that Lilly can help me with that. Lilly and the kids, the little shits. I’m glad Jeny’s told my story, our story. I think people will like it. What happened to us, to me, well you just can’t make that shit up.

**I’d like to thank Amber and all of you for this amazing opportunity to share Colt with you. If you want to know how it ends pick up my new release today!

EXCERPT:

Lilly looked down at the football, lying prone and guilty in the sand, as realization hit her.

“Oh my God, Que! Are you okay?”

She examined Que’s head and neck checking for injuries, with rapid authority. A small goose egg already formed just above her right temple. A tiny cut opened in her eyebrow, from her broken sunglasses now laying in the sand, causing a small bead of blood to well up.

Used to the recklessness of her son and his friends regarding the sport, Lilly turned, gearing up for an impressive tongue lashing to teenagers.

“What in the hell...” she bellowed, turning around and smacking her face into the sweaty muscular chest of a massive redhead. Refusing to let the fourteen-inch height difference and the hundred and sixty pounds of additional weight intimidate her, Lilly balled her small fists on her hips, shifted her gaze up, and narrowed her eyes.

“What in the hell is the matter with you? You’re on a crowded beach with a bunch of young children and families. You’re a grown-ass man. Can’t you catch a football?” When he stared down at her in fascinated disbelief, she continued. “There is a wide-open park just over there,” she said, stabbing her finger in the general vicinity. “Maybe you and your little friends”— she looked over at all the massive men in his group, but continued undaunted—“should go over there and pull your heads out of your asses.”

Author Bio:

Award-winning author, Jeny Heckman, was born in Bellingham, Washington, and was the youngest of two daughters. She met her husband, Jeff, in August 1992, and eloped three months later, at Magen’s Bay, on St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.

She wrote her first book, the Catch, in a few short months but took several years before she gained the courage to self-publish it at her son’s urging, and her love for writing began.

In 2018, Jeny knew her next project would be a series that showed adults could have adventures in the paranormal-fantasy genre too. So, she created the Heaven & Earth series, a story of doomed Greek gods and their only salvation, their modern-day descendants. Her first book of the series, the Sea Archer, was immediately picked up by the New York publishing house, the Wild Rose Press, and won, “Best in Category” from the 2018 Chanticleer International Book Awards.

In the year 2020, Jeny released, Dancing Through Tears, a short story from the anthology, Australia Burns: Volume Two, highlighting the Route 91 massacre from the perspective of one family at the concert, and at Mandalay Bay. She also intends to release, the Warrior’s Progeny, and Dee’s Cornucopia, in 2020, continuing the Heaven & Earth Series.

Jeny lives in Washington State with her husband of over twenty-eight years.

#AuthorInterview #NewRelease - "Touch Me" by Nancy Fraser

Thank you, Nancy, for stopping by my blog. I can't wait to learn more about you.

What kind of research did you do for Trust Me?

I had sex. Well, not recently, but my imagination is healthy.

Did you travel, use the Internet, speak with experts on a topic, etc?

I did, at one point, take a trip down memory lane. It’s very long and dusty road.

What process did you go through when you picked your characters’ names for Trust Me?

I have a few favorites. Or, I’ll hear a name on television and think, “that’s nice”. Most often, I just calculate the year my hero or heroine was born and look up popular names for that year. Just as an aside... “Nancy” is never there.

Are your characters based on anyone you know?

I wish. I’d be nabbing my hero, Aaron Blake, for myself.

Do any of your characters take over and write the book themselves sometimes? Who?

Most often it’s the hero that speaks to me. Or, at least, he’s the one whispering the dirty words.

What do you prefer: ebook or print? Why?

I love a good print book on a rainy day. There’s something comforting about a big chair, a hot cup of coffee, and a great book. However, I’m usually too busy to sit and read, so I grab my e-reader for convenience sake.

How long have you been writing? When did you decide to become an author?

I’ve been writing romance since the mid-1990s and published my first book in 1996. I knew from a young age (probably middle school) that I wanted to write. Thankfully, I had a number of great English teachers who prompted me to do just that.

What did you do when you received your first Acceptance Letter?

I was at work when the late, and wonderful, Kate Duffy called me from Kensington in New York. One of my best friends had sold to them a few days before. Once I hung up from talking to Kate, I called my friend and told her we’d be sharing shelf space in November. I think we both deafened our co-workers with our excited screams. It was kind of weird that I was less excited talking to Kate but it really hit me when I share the news.

All writers suffer from writer’s block at least once in their career. What’s your go-to cure?

Simple. Jealousy. I move on to another project and then, all of a sudden, my heroine is begging me to come back and my hero is taunting me with his grins and those sexy swear words. It usually only takes a day for them to figure out I’ve left them behind.

Sometimes the romance genre gets a bad reputation for being cliché and full of Fabios. How do you respond to that?

I usually don’t. Those that bash romance are never going to read one, so I don’t think it’s productive to waste my valuable time arguing with them and trying to convince them otherwise. It’s their loss that they can’t accept the wonderful values and love that we share in our books.

We all need a little inspiration in our lives. What’s your favorite quote and why?

“If the sex scene doesn't make you want to do it - whatever it is they're doing - it hasn't been written right.” - Sloan Wilson. This should be the credo of every author who writes steamy romance. It’s honest, it’s to the point, and he’s right.

Any advice for the aspiring authors out there? Particularly those who are feeling a little discouraged?

Actually, two pieces of advice. First, don’t let your mother, or sister, or cousin read your manuscript as a means to judge the quality. They’re going to tell you it’s great, even when it needs a good polish. Second, a solid career is built on perseverance and hard work. Don’t let the nay-sayers cramp your ambition or gloss over your goals. Make a wish list for where you want to be in one year, two, five, and work toward getting there.

How do you market your books? What do you find more effective?

Well, first of all, I own real estate on social media, especially Facebook and Twitter which is where my target audience resides. I have Instagram but I find it a bit “young” for me. I’m a big fan of using online sites like Red Roses and The Fussy Librarian to get a one-day promo boost.
For my longer books, I also venture into BookBub and Amazon advertising. It also helps to have my own author services company, because I create my own media advertising and trailers.

What is your favorite book? Favorite author?

My favorite book is a real oldie but goodie. Chain Lightning by the absolutely fabulous Elizabeth Lowell. I have a dog-eared signed copy from 1986 that I read twice a year—on my birthday and on New Years.

Besides writing and reading, what are some of your hobbies?

Writers are allowed to have hobbies? Great! Something else to add to my schedule. Just kidding, of course. I love to travel and I’m really missing it this year. I’d planned to take my three granddaughters to Paris this summer. So much for that idea!

What’s your most bizarre life experience?

That’s easy. Millenia ago, I worked at a medical center in a very large city. One night as I was leaving work, I stopped at the stop light and a man stepped out in front of my car. I thought to myself, if he pulls a gun, I’m going to run him down. I had one foot on the brake and the other hovering over the gas pedal and my car was a big boat of a car, so I figured I’d get him in one fell swoop.
He stuck his hands in his pockets and thought, this is it. He jerked open his coat and he was stark naked. I couldn’t help it, I started laughing. Hard. He got offended, closed his coat and walked away.
That bizarre incident became the opening for the very first book I sold, way back in 1996.

If you change places with any other writer, living or dead, who would it be?

That’s easy. H.G. Wells. I’ve published two time-travel romances and both were well received but neither was as great as those written by the master!

Blurb

Tax consultant Katherine Weller isn't ready for a relationship after a divorce that left her empty. But when her best friend suggests she set up a sex-only date through Lusty Liaisons, a unique and exclusive dating service, she's uncertain but intrigued.
Maybe a hot romp with a sexy, younger man is exactly what she needs to take that confident first step into her new life as a single woman.

Excerpt

Monday came and went. Tuesday...nothing. By Wednesday, Katherine wanted nothing more than to bury herself beneath a mound of blankets and stay there until her death. Or her eightieth birthday, whichever came first. By then, she’d be over the embarrassment of not being chosen for a night of uncomplicated, albeit hot, sex.

Lillie’s daily request for a progress report wasn’t helping matters.

Katherine’s cell dinged—a sure sign Lillie was sending her another message of encouragement. After pouring herself a second glass of Cakebread Chardonnay, Katherine picked up her phone, ran her fingertips across the lock screen, and stabbed the blinking icon.

You have a request.

Katherine double checked the sender’s name. Lusty Liaisons.

Damn! Hands shaking, she opened the email.

You’ve made a sexy match!

A request for contact was received from Aaron Blake. Mr. Blake is offering a fun-filled night at the Hudson Inn, Somerville, for this coming Saturday beginning at eight in the evening. If you decide to accept, please respond to this email. We will make the arrangements and confirm within twenty-four hours.

Click the link below to read Aaron’s profile.

She re-read the email twice before finally clicking on the profile link.

Aaron Blake, age thirty-two. Six-foot-two, two-hundred ten pounds. Occupation: government contractor. Sexual preferences: almost anything goes, although not into bondage.

Her gaze shot back to the top of the profile as it had at least a dozen times. Aaron Blake’s photo stared back at her. His crooked smile taunted her, as if daring her to ignore him. A thin scar ran from the corner of his right eye and down the side of his face, yet it wasn’t disfiguring in the least. If anything, it drew her attention to his deep-set, brown eyes and long lashes. His dark hair was peppered with a touch of gray. A hint of stubble shadowed his square jaw.

All-in-all, he was gorgeous. And no doubt able to get any woman he wanted. What could he possibly want with a woman ten years his senior?

Before she could lose her nerve, she pressed the reply key, checked the box that said “accept,” and hit the send button.

#NewRelease - "Wild Rose Pass" by Karen Hulene Bartell

Thanks so much for hosting me on your blog. It’s a pleasure to be here today!

WILD ROSE PASS MARKETING

Since the post must have something to do with writing, marketing, promoting, or developing my latest release, Wild Rose Pass, I opted to share the promos I’ve used in this campaign. Though my first book (a cookbook) was published thirty-six years ago, and my first novel was published twenty years ago, I’m always playing catch-up with marketing trends. Just about the time I begin to grasp which promos and ads work, trends change.
Wild Rose Pass was officially released two days ago, but since I received the Worldwide Release Date Notice nearly two months ago, I’ve been cramming to optimize its publicity and sales.
If I had unlimited funds for a blitz campaign, I wouldn’t be writing this blog, but since by necessity I’m a penny-pinching, DIY, wear-many-hats kind of author, here’s what’s worked for me so far.
Every month, I send out a newsletter to keep my readers interested and informed about upcoming books. I’ve learned cover photos only hold interest so long, but pictures of our dog or cats with the books captures attention. I also do newsletter shares. (If anyone’s interested, email me at info@karenhulenebartell.com.)
I create virtual tours via blogs and also do blog shares. (Again, if anyone’s interested, email me at info@karenhulenebartell.com.)
I post on Facebook and Twitter. And thanks to helpful WRP authors, have learned how to post on Instagram . Again, photos of pets with the latest release gains the most attention.
From religiously reading the posts on wrppromo@groups.io, I’ve picked and chosen what promos would most likely to work for me. This time around, I contacted AuthorsXP to help organize a Street Team. About twenty people signed on to promote my upcoming release. To their ranks, I invited several personal friends to join.
The results are still out on these tactics, but I hope the tips I’ve shared help raise your sales numbers. Have a Good Friday!

Cadence McShane, free-spirited nonconformist, yearns to escape the rigid code, clothes, and sidesaddles of 1880s military society in Fort Davis, Texas. She finds the daring new lieutenant exhilarating, but as the daughter of the commanding officer, she is expected to keep with family tradition and marry West Point graduate James West.

Orphaned, Comanche-raised, and always the outsider looking in, Ben Williams yearns to belong. Cadence embodies everything he craves, but as a battlefield-commissioned officer with the Buffalo Soldiers instead of a West Point graduate, he is neither accepted into military society nor considered marriageable.

Can two people of different worlds, drawn together by conflicting needs, flout society and forge a life together on the frontier?

Excerpt:

Reining his horse between catclaw and prickly-pear cactus, Ben Williams squinted at the late summer sun’s low angle. Though still midafternoon, shadows lengthened in the mountains. He clicked his tongue, urging his mare up the incline. “Show a little enthusiasm, Althea. If we’re not in Fort Davis by sunset, we’ll be bedding down with scorpions and rattlesnakes.”

More amber and persimmon leaves loosened, fell, and settled near the Indian pictographs on their tree trunks. When he saw the red- and yellow-ochre drawings, he smiled, recalling the canyon’s name—Painted Comanche Camp.

“How far to Fort Davis, lieutenant?” called McCurry, one of his recruits.

“Three hours.” If we keep a steady pace.

Without warning, the soldier’s horse whinnied. Spooking, it reared on its hind legs, threw its rider, and galloped off.

As he sat up, the man groaned, caught his breath, and stared into the eyes of a coiled rattler, poised to strike. “What the…?”

Flicking its tongue, hissing, tail rattling, the pit viper was inches from the man’s face.

A sheen of sweat appeared above the man’s lip. “Lieutenant—”

About the Author:

Author of the Trans-Pecos, Sacred Emblem, Sacred Journey, and Sacred Messenger series, Karen is a best-selling author, motivational keynote speaker, wife, and all-around pilgrim of life. She writes multicultural, offbeat love stories that lift the spirit. Born to rolling-stone parents who moved annually, Bartell found her earliest playmates as fictional friends in books. Paperbacks became her portable pals. Ghost stories kept her up at night—reading feverishly. The paranormal was her passion. Westerns spurred her to write (pun intended). Wanderlust inherent, Karen enjoyed traveling, although loathed changing schools. Novels offered an imaginative escape. An only child, she began writing her first novel at the age of nine, learning the joy of creating her own happy endings. Professor emeritus of the University of Texas at Austin, Karen resides in the Hill Country with her husband Peter and her “mews”—three rescued cats and a rescued *Cat*ahoula Leopard dog.

This is Tory, short for Toreador, since his brindle coloring looks just like he’s wearing a tight pair of Toreador Pants. In the background are the Davis Mountains. We adopted him from the Fort Davis, TX, Humane Society.
