Review - 'Damage Control' by JW Stacks
Review
Jennifer and Mike were friends
but they were secretly in love with one another back in high school. He left
for the Navy while she stayed home in the little town of Mercy Ridge. He returned
after several years and they meet up again after she has car trouble. He’s
living with a secret and she’s a reporter, determined to find out the truth. What
she learns, however, wasn’t what she expected.
This sweet story focuses on second
chances and a love that never died. I really enjoyed watching Jen and Mike come
to terms with their past, work through his emotional problems, and look forward
to a future together.
Story flowed smoothly with no
typos that I noticed. I like JW’s writing style and I look forward to reading
more of the author’s work.

Review - 'Always on Christmas' by Jackie Marilla
Review
Emma and her daughter Ally move to Hawaii after Emma inherited an old cabin in her mother’s will. Emma struggles for everything she has—she doesn’t like to accept help—but help comes anyway in the form of her sexy new neighbor Hank. Her daughter is instantly crazy about him but Emma pushes him away because she doesn’t want anyone to help her through rough times.
Although I respect her pride and independence streak, I think Emma made a foolish choice which nearly cost her and Ally their lives. Then Hank to the rescue.
The story is well written and flowed smoothly. I love the scenery descriptions and wish the book would’ve been longer. Hank and Emma make a wonderful couple, Ally is just precious and the ending scene is sooooo sweet.

Review - 'Lesson Plan for Love' by Jackie Marilla
Review
Kristin moves to Mercy Ridge for
a fresh start as the new third grade teacher. Chad’s girlfriend broke up with
him the day before but he instantly gets over her as soon as he sees Kristin.
She moves into a small cabin on Chad’s parents’ property and she lets him know
right away that she just wants to be friends (that she can’t be in a relationship but she secretly wants him anyway) after
he hits on her. Everyone keeps telling him she’s a keeper and Chad pursues her
even though he thinks she’s not interested. When he finds out her secret, he’s devastated
and believes she lied to him. Although I’d already guessed what her secret was,
I didn’t expect him to act so callous and childish. She tried to explain even
though she did nothing wrong but he wouldn’t act like a mature adult and listen
to her until days later after his mom talked to him. Then they finally hash it
out.
This sweet, clean romance is definitely
very clean—meaning the couple doesn’t
even kiss until the last scene of the book. The writing flowed smoothly and I
enjoyed the story for the most part, except for Chad’s reaction to a mistake Kristin
made a year ago.
I look forward to reading more
books in the series (all books are standalones).

Review - 'Drawn into Christmas 2' by JW Stacks
Review
We met Alise at the end of the first book. She’s an elf
in Santa’s workshop who distrusts Santa’s girlfriend, Becky. In book 2, she
learns to trust Becky and they become friends/allies against Captain Superior
who wants to steal a magical device from the North Pole/Workshop. The main
character is this story was Alise, and then Becky. The men played a second
string role—Becky’s man Kris (Santa) and Alise’s man Sir Richard—which took me
by surprise.
I wonder if there will be a book 3 because I have a few
unanswered questions. To not give too much of the story away, Becky did
something Kris probably won’t approve of and they need to discuss it (if I was
Kris, I’d be very mad and hurt).
I received an ARC from the author and he pre-warned me
about a few typos and formatting issues in the story. It should be fixed in the
final ebook copy. Other than that, the story flowed well and I enjoyed JW’s
third person narrative.
I look forward to reading more stories by this author.

Review - 'Drawn into Christmas 1' by JW Stacks
Review
Becky withdrew from the world and her family as a
teenager because she developed unusual powers. Whatever she imagined or drew on paper came
to life, but only for a temporary time. She told no one—afraid that she might
hurt someone or they’d lock her up in a padded room—and her gifts have
strengthened as she’s matured in age. She works as a comic-book artist,
dislikes Christmas because she’s estranged from her parents and gets drunk alone
on Christmas Eve night. She draws a sexy Santa and then he appears. The figment
of her imagination has a mind of his own and turns Becky’s already chaotic
world upside down. Hot sex and love blooms between her and Kris (Santa) and she
hopes he’s there to stay. When he disappeared as all the other men she’d drawn/imagined
did, she’s determined to get him back.
I’ve had this story on my Kindle for a while but I
finally read it in preparation of the sequel that’s just come out. I really
liked this story even though I usually don’t like first person narrative. The
writing flowed well, kept me entertained and I only noticed a few typos. I
don’t understand why there weren’t any chapter headings (the entire story is
one long chapter) but it didn’t bother me much since the story was so short
anyway.
Overall, the story is a great read and it certainly jogs
the imagination.
I can’t wait to find out what happens in the sequel.

Review - 'The Spirit Path' by Tammy Tate
Nicole goes horseback riding with her faithful gelding,
Buck, and her dog, Harley. After an accident where she falls from the horse and
hits her head, she wakes up in the same environment that’s totally different.
There she meets Flaming Arrow, a Sioux Indian, and he takes her back to his
village (well, he takes her to a romantic waterfall near the village where they
stay for a few days). Even though she believes she’s dreaming that she went
back in time, she falls in love with Flaming Arrow. After a second accident,
she wakes back up in the present day.
Some reviewers on here complained that Nicole fell for
Flaming Arrow too fast—they had sex too soon after meeting—and that she didn’t
panic enough when she realized she went back in time. I would’ve agreed with
that IF Nicole believed what was happening to her was real. Instead, she
thought it was all a dream and she was in a coma. So, to Nicole, why not have a
little fun?
This story is part one of three. The ending is a
cliffhanger since Nicole and Flaming Arrow’s story continues in the next two
books.
Other than a few typos and the author occasionally
‘telling’ the story instead of ‘showing’ it, I enjoyed this book and found
myself engrossed in the world Nicole woke up in (the year was 1812).
I look forward to the other stories in the series.

Review - 'Cowshed Christmas' by Lexie Stewart
Review
Ben and Rebecca have been married for ten years but their
marriage is falling apart due to lack of communication. They act happy in front
of their kids but it’s all a sham. Rebecca’s sister takes the kids to a resort
for Christmas and Ben and Rebecca are supposed to meet them there in a few days.
Instead, they get lost on the way, run out of gas and take shelter in an
abandoned cowshed that they decorate for Christmas.
I enjoyed this book because I don’t often read stories
about couples already in love and married. It was a refreshing change of pace.
I became teary-eyed quite a bit, especially in the beginning of the story, and
I wanted to shake some sense into both Ben and Rebecca for acting so foolish
and scared—they just needed to talk! When they finally did, however, I felt so
happy for them and I kept thinking it was about damn time.
Although I enjoyed the book, I sometimes felt confused
because of all the head-hopping. From Ben’s POV, to Rebecca’s and then back to
Ben’s, unnecessary POV shifts occurred in the same scene/chapter without proper
scene breaks. At one point of the story, we jump into Jessica’s head (Rebecca’s
sister). I may have read an ARC—which would account for why the editor didn’t
fix the head-hopping—but I’m not sure.
Despite this issue, I really did enjoy the book. It was
a beautiful love story of a couple in a rut who found their way back to one
another in the most unexpected of places.

Review - 'Off Duty Christmas' by Tammy Tate
Review
Although this story featured characters in law
enforcement, I’m glad ‘fighting bad guys’ wasn’t part of the plot. Instead, the characters seemed like regular, everyday people and I liked that the story was sweet and fun, not action-based.
Two cops, one dispatcher and a game warden go camping together over Christmas. The main characters, Kaitlyn and Bryce (dispatcher and game warden), are thrust together and romance blooms. Kaitlyn lost her parents when she was 18—it’s hard for her to trust and love again in fear she might lose her loved ones—but she’s attracted to Bryce beyond belief. We don’t learn much about Bryce’s past, other than he grew up on a horse farm, (I wanted to know more!) but he’s a kind, honest man any woman would be lucky to have.

There were a few formatting issues,
punctuation mistakes and weak transitions from chapter to chapter but I read an ARC so it's understandable. Other than those minor errors that could be fixed with a good proofread and edit, the book
flowed well and kept me entertained.
I enjoyed this story and I plan to check out more books
from the author.

Review - 'The Bed and Breakfast Man' by Amanda Ward
Review
This short, sweet story is all about finding love, forgiving yourself for past mistakes and moving on from those mistakes. Christian and his granddaughter stay at a bed and breakfast for Christmas and they meet Joy who owns the B&B. This is the first book I’ve read with older characters falling in love (she’s 48 and he’s in his 50’s) but you learn that, no matter your age, love is still love and you’re never too old to have fun.
They’ve both made mistakes and experienced devastating losses. Christian has moved on better in my opinion than Joy, but I believe that’s because he has a loving granddaughter in his life while Joy has no one. Their relationship starts off fast, a little too fast for Joy, but a sweet and romantic love blossoms between them. This story is a feel-good romance I’m sure many women could relate to.
I believe I received an ARC due to a few punctuation errors and random dashes scattered throughout the book. The story is written by a British author and, as an American reader, I felt a little confused at times due to various British words and phrases I’m unfamiliar with. This didn’t take away from the story, per se, but I did have to re-read a few sections to understand what was said or what had happened.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more by Amanda Ward.
