#BookReview – “Soul Magic” by Jennifer Lyon

Blurb

A lethal attraction…

Ruggedly sexy Sutton West is a Wing Slayer Hunter cursed to kill the very witches he’s vowed to protect. The dark drive to slay innocents is growing unbearable. His only hope is to find his soul mirror, or he’ll have to end his life. Once he touches the blood of gorgeous, smart and powerful Carla, she becomes a dangerous temptation he can’t resist. Is she his salvation or his destruction?

A terrible triangle…

Brilliant psychologist and witch Carla Fisk must work with Sutton to free her murdered sister’s soul trapped and tormented in a knife. As Carla and Sutton race to find the formidable psychic who has the knife, an irresistible desire binds them in a bond of passion. But their growing love is threatened when Carla is forced into an impossible choice between her beloved twin sister, and the man who owns her heart. How does she choose?

Is Love Really Enough?

When sinister forces unite to kill Carla, and cast her and her sister’s soul into a dark void, Sutton is driven to savage extremes to save the witch he loves more than his own life and soul. But will his actions destroy their bond forever?

Review

In book 2 in the Wing Hunter Slayers, Sutton is cursed to crave the blood of witches even though he hopes to find his soul-mirror in a witch. (Soul-mirrors are earth witches who are supposed to save hunters from the curse.) Several hunters are giving in to the bloodlust, killing both good and evil witches, which turns them rogue. Sutton and his friends have vowed never to give in and are forced to kill the rogues and evil witches alike.
Carla is an earth witch who uses her gifts to help others overcome terrible trauma. She feels compelled to help and trust Sutton even though he could snap at any moment. She’s still grieving over the loss of her twin sister, Keri, but then she learns that Keri’s soul is trapped inside the blade of a knife. Keri’s soul is reaching out to Sutton (through the sisters’ twin bond), and Keri wants Carla to help him. Carla believes Keri and Sutton are true soul-mirrors, but Sutton doesn’t. He wants and loves Carla.
I really enjoyed this story until the love triangle. Who is Sutton’s soul-mirror? Carla or Keri? The final answer to this was confusing.
There are some unanswered questions with some minor characters, but it doesn’t really matter overall. As with the first book, lots of innocent witches died, which made the story hard to read sometimes because it’s just so sad.
Carla and Sutton are great together. I really liked the H/h, but the confusion with the soul-mirrors distracted me.
3 Stars
