BLURB
Doctor Comfort Djan is looking for salvation after a tragic accident, which takes her to deprived regions where her skills heal the helpless. Until Fate thrusts her as a medic on board a West African military coastal protection ship. Proving herself to the male-only crew is nothing compared to being near one intense naval officer who has her feeling something other than her survivor's guilt.
Commander Akin Solarin wants nothing more than to do his job, especially when his medic's temporary replacement turns out to be a disconcerting woman who pushes all his buttons. He runs a tight ship, and doesn't need captivating and efficient yet aloof Comfort around to keep his heart-rate in semi-permanent overdrive.

Neither can deny the attraction between them, but navigating uncharted personal waters may be the least of their problems when confronted with bold pirate attacks and other vicious unknown dangers onboard the frigate. And when Comfort's life gets on the line, Akin knows he will do anything to save his medic and heal her battered heart in the process.

EXCERPT
Loosening his hold, he pulled himself back to hook a finger under her chin so she could look him in the eyes. She needed to see the truth of his words.
“No, Comfort. You’re strong. You always have been and I don’t doubt you always will be. Your ex was the weak one for expecting you to heal from the heartbreak of a lifetime without changing. For not being able to remember that everything passes. Everything. And not sticking by you until it did.”
Warm air fanned his cheek when she expelled a shuddering breath. “He had every right. Hell, I’m surprised he stayed as long as he did. We hadn’t been getting along for the year prior. We were both overworked and...”
“What?” He prodded with a small shake of her shoulder.
“I had been putting off having a baby for a while.” She lowered her gaze. “I wasn’t ready to lose the foothold I’d gotten on my career. If we’d had a child he would’ve proceeded while I’d been held back. I wasn’t ready to make the sacrifice.” She focused on him again. “I guess that makes me selfish.”
Akin smiled. “Only as selfish as anyone else, male or female, who wants to make a career for themselves. It’s just that women are expected to fall back when they have a child while men continue forward.”
Her brows bunched together. “If I didn’t know better I’d think you were a feminist.”
Free from witnesses, he released the laughter. How did she have the uncanny ability to set him free? “What makes you think I’m not?”
She raised a finger into the air, “You’re mean to women.”
“I’m mean to everyone.”
“True.” A second digit flung up. ”You don’t want female sailors on your ship.”
He grabbed her hand and laced their fingers together. How could such a small thing fit so perfectly into his?
“It’s not my rule. We’re on a pirate-seeking ship where the risk of being attacked is high. Pirates have no honor. I’d hate to think what would happen to a woman if she were ever captured during a siege.”

An icy chill stole down his spine at the thought of it ever happening with Comfort on board.

#BookReview – ‘How to Marry a Rake in Ten Days’ by Samantha Holt

Blurb

Dear Miss Manners,
I have been following your column for some time since I made my debut into society some five years ago. As a young woman, I took your advice to become a well-mannered, polite young lady who would surely find herself a husband during her first season. However, it soon became clear to me that your teachings no longer have a place in this century. England is a modern place now with modern gentlemen. They do not expect us to be coy and polite. In fact, such behaviour only has the effect of turning one into a wallflower. I would wager that the eligible gentlemen of today value a woman who can hold a strong conversation and show intelligence instead of submissiveness. After all, how are we English ladies meant to hold our own against these American heiresses and French beauties?
Now, it is likely too late for me but there are many other young women out there following your advice, many of whom are to be consigned to spinsterhood. As an unmarried woman yourself, how are we to trust your advice?
I challenge, you Miss Manners, to prove the worth of your advice. Show myself and your readers that etiquette can win the heart of a fine prospect. Christmas is approaching and it is a time to reflect is it not? I am sure many a man is considering the worth of a wife. I highly anticipate, and look forward to, the announcement of your own engagement by the start of the New Year.
Your once loyal reader,
Miss Disbelieving

Review

Angelina Ashdown withdrew from the eyes of high society after a scandal, and now she makes her living writing an etiquette column for a London newspaper. After a disgruntled reader writes to the paper and challenges Angelina to live up to her proper advice and find a husband before New Years, Angelina has no choice but to attend a Christmas house party in an attempt to find a husband. If she doesn’t secure a proposal, she could lose her job, her home, and her independence.
Benedict Britton attends the party to secure funding for his invention. Though he’s quite intelligent, his reputation as a rake precedes him. He never expected Angelina, the only woman he’s ever loved, to be at the party. The problem is, she hates him, and he doesn’t blame her for it. Stuck together at the snowy estate, Benedict and Angelina soon realize not everything is as it seems, and that there’s fine line between love and hate.
This is a really cute story. Both the H/h are very likable and have great chemistry. They’ve made mistakes and are willing to make amends, and that shows how they grew throughout the course of the novella.

#BookReview – ‘Birthday Wishes: The List’ by Braxton Cole

Blurb

Mari meets Luca on an adult website. She’s still smarting from a divorce and only looking to explore her desires. They create wish lists of their sexual fantasies and agree to work through them together. No strings, no attachments, nothing but pleasure, and Mari anticipates their first meeting with impatience. But through a miscommunication involving a private text message and Mari’s nosy brother, Luca ends up at her 30th birthday party, before their planned rendezvous. Much to her surprise, they seem to connect better than she expected, and in ways she hadn’t expected. He’s strong, commanding, but also gentle and respectful and he makes her ache in ways she never thought possible.

But when Luca later expresses a desire for something more than just casual sex, Mari's impulse is to run the other way. After all, her failed marriage is evidence that she really shouldn’t go much deeper. Can Luca convince Mari otherwise? Can he help her see that he's her ultimate birthday wish come true?

Review

Mari and Luca met on an online sex site. They created a list of dirty things they wanted to do with each other without the messiness of dating. It was strictly sex between them, nothing else. The night they agreed to meet in person was on Mari’s birthday, but she gets sidetracked at a surprise party. Luca shows up and now her family and friends thinks he’s her boyfriend, not her booty call. That’s so funny!
I really liked Luca. He’s a sexy and decent man, and he wants more than just a booty call. Mari, on the other hand, only cares about sex for the longest time. She’s pretty rude and hypocritical, but that’s understandable because she doesn’t really know what she wants or how to feel. There’s not a lot of conversation between the H/h, and since the story is an erotic romance, there’s lots of sex.
The story is told in first person POV in only Mari’s perspective, and I really wished I could’ve learned more about Luca.

#BookReview – ‘Desert Hunt’ by Anna Lowe

Blurb

Rae has a secret — one she can’t allow any wolf pack to discover. But with an old enemy hot on her heels, she has no option but to trust Zack, the man from the wrong side of the tracks. Taking off on the back of Zack's Harley seems like good idea at first, but when she lowers her defenses for the captivating coyote shifter, she might just be risking it all.

The new she-wolf in town may be strictly off-limits, but Zack just can’t keep away. When the thrill of the chase gets his blood pumping in more ways than one, he’s ready to overstep every boundary and break every rule. Destiny says she’s his—but the pack’s ruling alpha says she belongs to another.

There’s more than meets the eye on Twin Moon Ranch, home to a pack of shapeshifting wolves willing to battle for life and love.

Review

Rae is a werewolf with a secret. She doesn’t trust most people, especially alpha males, and she hates living under the horrible alpha of her current pack. When she finally receives a long-awaited transfer to the Twin Moon Ranch in Arizona, she doesn’t know what to expect but finds a kinship to the earth while avoiding the other wolves at her new home. But she can’t avoid Zach, a mix bred, and her inner wolf knows he’s her mate. A mate she never wanted.
Half coyote and half wolf, Zach knows what it’s like to be an outcast. His two animals constantly nag at Zach and argue with each other in his head, but they’re in agreement when they sniff out Rae. She’s their mate. His best friend, Ty, is the reigning alpha’s son and set to inherit the pack someday. He’s just as lonely as Zach, probably more so, but he’s obedient when it comes to his father. The cruel alpha, Old Tyrone, demands that no one touches the new she-wolf, but Zach can’t help the pull between him and Rae.
Rae and Zach are very likeable characters. The reader feels their hesitancy, loneliness, and alienation, and the strength they both find to love and trust the other.
Though I really liked this shifter story, the fight scene with the bad guy at the end was a little predictable. Rae’s actions over a perceived betrayal irked me, but I understand she needed personal time to fight her own demons before she gave herself fully to her destined mate.
My favorite scene is Zach and Ty’s “play” fight. I love a good bromance, and these two sexy shifters have that down pat.
This is a prequel novella to the Wolves of Twin Moon Ranch series, and I’m definitely interested in reading the other books.

Chapter Twelve Excerpt

I didn’t think about it. I didn’t even hesitate. I tugged her hand, pulled Elise against me, and covered her mouth with mine. Her startled gasp met my tongue, and a bolt of desire shot clean through me.
This morning, our kiss had been a measured exploration. But not this time. This was a conquest. And even though I led the kiss and it was my arms that wrapped around Elise and gathered her tight against me, I was the one conquered.
Even as I plundered her mouth, I knew surrender was my only option. How could I resist her? She was fearless. She was flawless. She’d redefined what I knew of beauty. Yes, anyone could see she was beautiful. But who else but me knew how brave and capable she was? How ingenious and resourceful? How genuine?
She knew all of my secrets, and still she opened her mouth to welcome my outlaw tongue. And those were her hands diving inside the shelter of my jacket, skimming over my thin dress shirt and leaving behind a signature of heat.
I had no business getting hard in the shadowed hallway of my parents’ house on the night of our escape. With Elise Cormier, no less. But under her touch, I was like a brick. I’d never wanted anyone like this.
I had to stop. I knew this. But I just wanted to keep kissing her. To lie down with her. To listen to that delicate cry she sang into my ear as my lips moved to her neck. But what I wanted more than anything was time. Time to discover all of her secrets. I wanted to hear everything she wanted, and I ached to give her whatever I could.
But I could have none of that. Especially time.

#BookReview – ‘Tempting the Tiger’ by Sennah Tate

Blurb

Sarah is more than just a curvy, book-obsessed librarian… she’s a lady with secrets. Magical secrets that cannot be revealed, especially to the sexy new Director of her beloved library. She’s got way too much going on in her life to be checking out the boss, much less investigating the strange phone calls he keeps getting that he won't explain…

Sloan has a few furry secrets of his own -- shifting into a tiger, for instance -- but he can’t seem to keep anything from Sarah. The sexy little witch stirs his imagination and fills his dreams. With a lot of flirting and a little time, Sloan’s pretty damn sure he’ll lure Sarah into his bed.

Suddenly Sloan’s loyalties are thrown into question when the interests of the pack involve Sarah’s destruction, and time quickly becomes his enemy. All he wants is to get Sarah to take her hair down, show her how good it can feel to let loose…

Only Sloan might be the one to lose his tightly-held control, and it just might spell disaster for his clan… or his love.

Review

Sarah is a librarian and a witch who cannot control her power. She’s scared of this power and tries her best to keep to herself to not hurt other people. When she meets the new director of the library, her power goes even more out of control because she feels an instant connection to him.
Sloan is a tiger shifter who bought out the library in order to discover if there are ley lines—powerful magical lines that crisscross under the ground beneath the library. If there are ley lines, he and his tiger clan want to control them to fight off the wolf and bear clans.
Sarah is the Guardian of the ley lines but doesn’t know it. Sloan is hell-bent on seducing her to discover if the lines really do exist. In the process, he realizes she’s his mate and must choose whether to obey the tiger clan and do their bidding, or keep Sarah and the library safe.
There were a few typos but I enjoyed the author’s writing style. Unfortunately, I couldn’t connect with either Sarah or Sloan. In my opinion, Sarah was too wishy-washing and Sloan didn’t seem strong enough.
The book didn’t really end on a cliffhanger, but it feels like it did. Even though Sarah gets her power under control and scares off the villain, the bad guy will certainly cause more problems later on. The library and the ley lines are still in danger from the tiger clan, and Sloan could be killed for siding with Sarah and not killing her as he should’ve done. How will all this be resolved? I know there are more books in the series, but I thought this was the only book that focused on Sarah and Sloan.

#MysteryExchange - The Murder That Inspired a Romantic #Mystery Novel, with @Kris_Bock

Many writers are inspired by real events or people in their lives. This makes difficult situations a form of research. “This stinks, but maybe I can use it in a book!” I write romantic suspense for adults as Kris Bock and middle grade novels (for ages 9 to 12) as Chris Eboch. In most of these books, the connection to real-life experiences isn’t obvious.

In my romantic suspense Whispers in the Dark, my heroine is an archaeology Masters student working at the fictional “Lost Valley” monument, which is closely based on Hovenweep National Monument, where I once spent a week camping. In Counterfeits, the heroine inherits a children’s art camp, which I based on a camp near Jemez Springs, New Mexico, where I’ve attended many writing retreats. Using real locations helps me bring the settings to life even if I did not, for example, fall into a ravine while fleeing from a bad guy.

But What We Found was inspired by helping to uncover a true case of murder.

Lest you think that makes me some kind of amateur detective, my involvement was purely accidental. Two friends and I were exploring the mountains, looking for some suitable gravel to try gold panning (because, why not?). We found a likely spot and were about to take a sample when the guys smelled something horrible. A glance in the right direction showed them a dead body hidden just out of sight of the path.

The next hour passed in a surreal blur. We'd left our phones in another vehicle, at the base of the mountain. Once we retrieved them, we still had to find a place with cell reception. We called 911, waited for the police, and led them to the body. Later that night we were interviewed by detectives.

By the following day, they had identified the body as a woman who had been missing. Her estranged ex-boyfriend was already a suspect in her disappearance, but without her body they'd have trouble prosecuting him. Seeing her picture on TV and learning about her family made the situation real in a new way. We wanted justice for someone we’d never met.

It’s All Research

As a writer, I knew I was getting rare first-hand experience into something powerful. I took pages of notes during that first week, even though I didn’t know how or when I might use them. I was fortunate to be with two men who talked openly about their experiences: the nightmares, the guilt over violence against women, the anxiety that came from now wondering what you might see in the bushes.

Three things struck me most strongly.

First, we all felt deeply invested in the case, even though we’d never met the woman in life and didn’t know anyone else involved. We followed the news stories, even though they made us anxious. When the murderer was finally sentenced … well, we weren't happy (the sentence of less than 20 years of less than 20 years was not, in our opinion, nearly long enough), but we were relieved that it was over.

Second, it affected every aspect of our lives for weeks. Even though the likelihood of finding another body, or even witnessing a different crime, was extremely slim, we were on high alert at all times. It was a struggle to put it behind us while still honoring the memory of the victim and holding on to what we had learned.

And finally, someone in law enforcement said that often people don’t report crime scenes like these. How could someone walk away from that? I started thinking about all the reasons someone might want to cover up their discovery, even if they had nothing to do with the crime. And that inspired What We Found.

Turning Truth into Fiction

Several years passed before I felt distant enough from the experience to fictionalize it, but I still had all those notes and memories to draw on. Some elements of What We Found, mainly the emotional ones, are taken directly from that experience. Most character and plot elements are fictional, although some are loosely inspired by the real events.

This isn’t an experience I would wish on anyone, but we’re glad we helped bring a crime to light and a murderer to justice. And it led to what I consider my most powerful and personal novel to date. After all, one benefit to being a writer is that the worst experiences are still valuable as research.

That’s the truth behind What We Found.

When Audra goes back to her small hometown after college, she simply wants to fit in, work hard, and protect her 12-year-old brother from their overbearing mother. Finding a dead body in the woods changes everything.

Her former crush, Jay, insists they don’t report the body. But the dead woman was murdered, and someone starts targeting Audra. She has to stand up for herself in order to stand up for the murder victim. It’s a risk, and so is reaching out to the mysterious young man who works with deadly birds of prey. But with danger all around, some risks are worth taking.

“Another action-packed suspense novel by Kris Bock, perhaps her best to-date. The author weaves an intriguing tale with appealing characters. Watching Audra, the main character, evolve into an emotionally-mature and independent young woman is gratifying.” Reader Ellen Rippel

This title stands alone and is not part of a series.

Excerpt:

An engine started. The battered old truck stood out like a janitor at the prom. It was dark blue, splattered with mud and probably decades old, with a cap on the bed. The evening sun glared off the side window, but as I walked slowly past the front I saw a figure inside – the one-handed man. He had his hand on the wheel but his head back, eyes closed.

I paused, studying his face. I guessed he was in his twenties, with short, light brown hair and pleasant features in a mask as still as death.

He opened his eyes and looked straight into mine.

I couldn’t move as he held my gaze. My heart thumped against my ribs. He studied me without expression, no smile, no frown, nothing in his face but weariness.

Finally I had to blink, and once the eye contact was broken, I jerked my gaze away and kept moving. I quickly turned between the next two cars, to get out of his view. I’d have to cross behind his truck to reach my car, which might look odd if he was still watching, but I didn’t care so long as I got out of there, fast.

I noticed the rusty screeching again. It was coming from his truck. I stumbled to a stop, staring at the back of the truck. What could be making that sound? The tailgate and back window on the cap were closed, hiding the sight inside, but the screech came again and again like someone – something – screaming.

The screams seemed to echo in my head. I couldn’t take any more. I turned away with a hand over my mouth to hold back my own scream and hurried to my car.

#BookReview – ‘Wolf at the Door’ by Sofia Grey

Blurb

Love can heal all wounds…

Pop star Lillian Hart is determined never to trust another man. She has no idea that the wolf at her door is anything other than a wounded dog, much less the Alpha of the Snowdonia Wolf pack. There’s something about the wild creature that pulls at her. Then a man with her wolf’s eyes starts to invade her dreams, and reality and fantasy merge in a way that has her hoping, against all odds, for dreams to come true.

Lillian may have sworn off men, but Jake’s not just any man, he’s a shifter, and he’s about to shift Lillian’s world to make room for him. He vows to claim her as his Mate, and when Jake makes a vow, he keeps it. But Lillian wants to take it slow and Jake is not about to waste any time.
In this battle of wills, both discover giving in and trusting their hearts can heal even the deepest of hurts.

Review

Lillian is a pop star hiding from the paparazzi because of a bad breakup with her more famous actor boyfriend. She’s heading to a remote cabin in the snowy mountainous region of Wales and almost hits a wolf. Though she missed him, she finds blood on the road but can’t find the injured wolf. She continues to the cabin and later finds the poor wolf at her door. She lets him in, bandages the wound, and calls him Wolfie.
Jake is the alpha of his pack. Injured in an old hunter’s snare, he goes to the cabin for help since he can’t make it back to the pack. He instantly knows Lillian is his mate from first sniff and is determined to seduce her in her dreams. Probably about half the book is in dream sequences.
I couldn’t connect with the H/h. Lillian acted too flighty and had an affair with Kurt, a married man, but at least she believed he and his wife were separated and in the middle of a divorce. Kurt did a lot of awful things to Lillian and never got his comeuppance in the end. Jake took a long time to tell Lillian the truth, and when he finally did, she accepted the fact that werewolves are real pretty easily.
Other than a few typos, the story is well-written. The author flip-flopped between the H/h’s POVs way too often (multiple times, back and forth, per chapter) but at least the shifts and scene breaks were properly labeled. I liked the plot and the universe the author created, but I really wish I could’ve understood Lillian and Jake better.

Excerpt from Besotted:

Regan was just too damn alluring in that dress for him to accept that he couldn’t have her if he wanted her.
He was an idiot. He should have told her years ago. He should have told everyone. Despite the tongue- lashing he was silently giving himself, Tyler was certainly no fool. “The professor” to his friends, he was generally serious and professional. He had the smarts necessary to obtain both an MBA and a law degree, and he was now CEO of LHRE and on hiatus from one of the fastest growing tech companies in the country. He kept his cool in general, but again and again he behaved like an idiot around Regan.
Since that damn frog almost thirty years ago, he had loved no one but Regan. Sometimes they made it work together, like in high school, but most times not. His feelings were unchanged, but something always stopped him from declaring his love and asking her to do the same. This time it was something insurmountable.
And yet Tyler couldn’t stay away. He was the proverbial moth to the flame, flirting with disaster every time he flirted with her. He had promised to stay away, to keep her safe, but the attraction was undeniable. Yep, prize idiot.
Returning to the ballroom after the latest threats, Tyler briefly considered sharing the conversation, coming clean with Regan and perhaps moving their relationship forward. He was at a fork in the road but remained silent, Tyler knew he was on the wrong path but couldn’t summon the will to fix it. Not only were his problems unsolveable, but she was involved with Brandon. Tyler felt hopeless.
He was preoccupied just as Regan accused, but Tyler tried to give Regan the attention she deserved. He failed miserably until Regan suggested they just leave. That got his attention. Who knew when he would hold her in his arms again.
“Come dance with me again. It would be a crime to waste that dress.”
Encircling Regan in his arms, his body responded to her nearness, even as his mind worried over the earlier texts. He was unaware of his hand stroking her back, fingers lightly skimming over her bare skin. He wasn’t thinking clearly when he pulled her close or when he dropped kisses on her hair. He wasn’t paying attention, just acting on instinct, Regan was responding, her breath growing uneven, her hands clinging to his shoulders.
